The New England Journal of Medicine Selects Mark Logic to Help Deliver New Ways to Search Case Records
SAN MATEO, CA — December 21, 2005 — Mark Logic® Corporation, provider of the industry’s leading XML content platform, today announced that the New England Journal of Medicine, the world’s most cited weekly general medical journal, has implemented MarkLogic Server to launch its Search Case Records, a new way to search the Journal’s large repository of case materials published in the section, “Case Records of the Massachusetts General Hospital.” As the foundation for this new search tool, MarkLogic Server has made it faster and easier to find precise contextual medical information, such as presenting complaint and final diagnosis from real-world cases.
With MarkLogic Server, physicians, clinical staff, medical teachers, and physicians-in-training can now query the case records of renowned Massachusetts General Hospital. The results provide comprehensive case summaries and easy-to-use graphical icons that identify available supplemental content such as lab reports, radiological scans, histopathology slides, and photos associated with a particular case record. For example, a physician looking for information would enter relevant search terms into the Search Case Records user interface. Upon querying the New England Journal of Medicine’s contentbase, the physician would receive case records containing the search terms, along with a summary of the presenting complaint and final diagnosis. In addition, the physician could drill deeper into any particular case to review related content, including laboratory test results, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans, electrocardiograms (EKGs), clinical photos, and pathology images.
Previously, cases published by the New England Journal of Medicine were part of a general search capability, and no custom information about presenting complaint, final diagnosis, related images, or lab results could be accessed separately. The New England Journal of Medicine has created a specialized search tool with MarkLogic Server that is tailored to query the unique content of medical case records and to effectively manage its high-valued content through enhanced XML-aware search. So far, thousands of searches have been completed using this new tool, which is available at http://www.nejm.org/searchcases/search.aspx .
“MarkLogic Server has helped us deploy a custom search tool for our particular content, broad audience, and their educational needs,” said Kent Anderson, executive director, international business and product development for the New England Journal of Medicine. “Mark Logic’s fast and extensible solution enables us to refine our queries for particular content types and exploit XML in new ways to help users navigate our information more easily and find the specific materials they need.”
MarkLogic Server helps providers of information products by enabling them to integrate content from different sources, repurpose content for multiple uses, deliver content through multiple channels, and more effectively mine content to find previously undiscovered information. With the industry’s most powerful implementation of the W3C-standard XQuery language, MarkLogic Server enables customers to build powerful applications that convert, query, manipulate, and render content. Designed for enterprise-class high performance and scalability, MarkLogic Server delivers millisecond response times against multi-terabyte contentbases.
“The New England Journal of Medicine has a stellar reputation for working at the interface of medical research and clinical practice and Mark Logic is pleased to have been selected as the foundation for Search Case Records,” said David Spenhoff, vice president of marketing for Mark Logic. “As an organization that is embracing emergent technologies for content, such as XML and XQuery, the Journal is revolutionizing the way information is produced and delivered to meet the demands of today’s medical professionals.”
